The Houseplant Hub
My name is Azy, I was born and spent half my life raised in Oregon. My businesses have been a blessing and a whirlwind all at once.
In August of 2019 I signed the lease for the soon to be yoga studio on Pacific Avenue. After months of renovations and pouring every hour of the day and every dollar in my bank account into my first business, I was finally able to open the doors on October 7th. By the end of February we got the first wind of COVID-19 and by March we were officially shut down and not legally allowed to stay open. Although this was a devastating blow, I did everything in my power to stay open; online classes, small business grants, retail, etc… but it just didn’t seem to be enough. My sister, who had intended to create her own business within the yoga studio, had rented the main floor of the building instead (one floor below), to open a little health food store for Forest Grove. She quickly realized that this was not her calling and let me know about an opportunity for her to move out of state. I approached my landlord in hopes to strike a deal to see what we could do if I rented out the entire building until he found a new tenant. I figured another business would be the only way my little yoga studio could survive, and I knew he wanted his building to stay fully occupied during the pandemic. Thankfully he agreed to a short term lease.
In August of 2020 I bought Market Maeve as a health food store with a few plants, sold all the food, and made it into just a little plant shop! I had no idea what I was doing but I knew retail businesses were still functional during the pandemic and I wasn’t ready to let go of the studio quite yet. All the stars aligned and I was able to keep both businesses afloat during COVID.
A year later I had the opportunity to join Zesti Carts as they opened and here we are today, as The Houseplant Hub on Yew St. and Upstairs Yoga still on Pacific Ave. Both businesses are still growing and establishing themselves but I feel so blessed that we are on the other side of the pandemic and open! July will mark one year for The Houseplant Hub and in October, the studio will be celebrating its 4 year anniversary.
