Lessons in Leadership: Playing the Long Game with Carli Lloyd, Soccer Superstar, Olympic Gold Medalist and FIFA World Cup Champion

Carli Lloyd is one of the most decorated American soccer players of all time. With 17 years on the U.S. Women’s National Team, two FIFA World Cup Championships and two Olympic Gold Medals, this two-time FIFA World Player of the Year serves as a model for how long-term goal-setting can lead to goal-getting.

Lloyd believes that the key to successfully achieving a goal is never letting doubt, failure or defeat hold you back and more importantly, never allowing them to define you. Her unparalleled passion, uncompromising work ethic, and relentless pursuit to be better every day, propelled her to superstar status and earned her a spot on Team USA in Tokyo this summer. This will be her fourth Olympic appearance (tying the record for most Olympic Games by a U.S. soccer player).

An inspiration and role model to many young athletes, Lloyd has parlayed her fame into helping the next generation of players incorporate mindset training into their game. Through her CL10 Soccer Clinics, she teaches young players the importance of building strong technical skills alongside mental toughness in order to play their best game and lead their best lives both on and off the field.

The discussion will be moderated by Vincent J. Lumia, Managing Director, Head of Field Management, Morgan Stanley.

Carli Lloyd is one of the most decorated American soccer players of all time. Over 17 years on the U.S. Women’s National Team (USWNT), Lloyd has won two World Cups, two Olympic Gold Medals, been twice named FIFA World Player of the Year (2015, 2016), scored 125 goals (the 4th top scorer in USWNT history), and played in 304 matches (3rd most appearances in international matches — men or women). Lloyd will represent Team USA in Tokyo this summer in her fourth Olympic appearance (tying the record for most Olympic Games by a U.S. soccer player). Her previous Olympic achievements include scoring the game-winning goals in the finals at both the 2008 Games in Beijing and the 2012 Games in London and being the only American to score multiple goals in three separate Olympics (2008, 2012, 2016).

Lloyd represented the United States at the FIFA Women’s World Cup in 2007, 2011, 2015 and 2019, winning the tournament in 2015 and 2019. In 2015 she was named best player, became the first athlete ever to score three goals in a Women's World Cup final, and the second player ever to score a hat-trick in a final  (previously only done by England's Geoff Hurst in 1966).

Outside international competition, Lloyd plays for NJ/NY Gotham FC and helps develop the next generation of soccer players at her CL10 Soccer Clinics.

Lloyd detailed her hard-fought journey to the top of the soccer world in her 2016 New York Times bestselling memoir “When Nobody Was Watching.” She lives in New Jersey with her husband.
