Leadership and Personal Growth

Leadership and Personal Growth: A Journey of Self-Discovery and Empowerment

Leadership and personal growth are intricately linked, feeding off one another in a cycle of continuous development. A leader's journey is one not just of guiding others but also of evolving personally. I joined the Women to Women Network SW WA leadership team this year with a passion to share the joy I experienced last year as a member connecting, supporting, and collaborating with other members of the network in Oregon.

As I’ve navigated the complexities of leadership, I have been challenged to explore my potential, confront my weaknesses, and grow in both capacity and character. Leadership fosters personal growth and, conversely, personal growth nurtures effective leadership.

Leadership requires self-awareness, emotional intelligence, and adaptability, all of which necessitate personal growth. When I started my business four years ago, it didn’t take long before I realized the necessity to also be on a personal growth journey at the same time. I have done a lot of work on my limiting beliefs, my relationship to money, and building self-awareness on my journey.

This year I learned that leading others is not merely about directing tasks or making decisions; it is about inspiring and influencing others to reach collective goals. To do this effectively, leaders must constantly reflect on their strengths and limitations, learning from both successes and failures.

Leadership can be a bumpy ride as you develop resilience, empathy, and innovative thinking.   Being on the WtoWN leadership team has exposed me to diverse perspectives, unpredictable situations, and varying emotional landscapes, pushing me beyond my comfort zone and driving my personal development.

Additionally, leadership has forced me to face my fears and insecurities. Whether it's the fear of failure, the pressure of responsibility, shutting down the demons from my past experiences, or the discomfort of making tough decisions, I have been constantly pushed to confront these emotions. I have not always been graceful in this process, but I am eternally grateful for the openness, support, and grace that the executive team (Liz Hatcher, Kelly MacLeod, Julie Waters), and Cindy Carlton, SW WA regional leadership team have provided in the development of my mental and emotional fortitude on my personal growth journey.

My experience on the leadership team has made me acutely aware that I am a “work in progress” in developing my leadership style and my abilities. Self-awareness is the ability to understand and recognize your own thoughts, feelings, behaviors, and values. It is a foundational element of both leadership and personal growth. Effective leaders understand that their behavior, decisions, and communication style impact the people around them. This awareness helps leaders assess their impact, adjust their approach, and evolve in response to the needs of the group. I greatly appreciate the strength and support of the WtoWN’s leadership team on my self-awareness and leadership journey.

My personal growth happens when I actively seek to understand my motivations, values, and emotional triggers. It is not always an easy path to choose to play in the personal growth arena. I have found that it is essential to engage and connect with like minded individuals who are also in the arena in order to get the support and accountability required to embrace the journey and truly grow. Leaders who are self-aware are better equipped to manage their emotions, avoid reactive decision-making, and maintain focus under pressure. In this way, personal growth through self-awareness directly enhances leadership effectiveness. It’s not the easy path, but the juice is worth the squeeze in the end when you evolve into a more influential leader.

It is the process of self-reflection that is key to self-awareness. Leaders who take time to reflect on their actions, consider feedback from others, and evaluate their experiences are more likely to grow. Personal growth isn't a linear process; it involves the willingness to examine one's behavior and make adjustments.

Contrary to the traditional view of leadership as a position of authority, today's most effective leaders embrace vulnerability and empathy. Being vulnerable allows leaders to admit they don't have all the answers, which in turn fosters an environment of trust and collaboration. Personal growth is often the result of such vulnerability—of being open to feedback, acknowledging mistakes, and allowing others to contribute to solutions. This embrace of vulnerability and empathy has been my experience as a director on the leadership team.

As a lifelong learner, I remain curious, open to new ideas, and eager to expand my knowledge. This mindset of continuous learning is essential for my personal and professional growth, as it encourages me to adapt to changing circumstances and seek out new challenges.  I try to see every experience, whether positive or negative, as an opportunity for growth. Being on the leadership team provided me with one of those opportunities and I discovered what’s possible.

I’ve learned that personal growth is not only a byproduct of leadership but also an essential component that enriches it. Leaders who invest in their own development are better equipped to empower others, solve complex problems, and create inclusive environments where people feel valued and motivated. The more I grow as an individual, the more capable I become of lifting others.

My personal journey of growth, whether through emotional resilience, intellectual curiosity, or the cultivation of strong relationships, translates directly into the quality of my leadership.  Navigating challenges allows me to handle ambiguity, lead with authenticity, and foster environments where others can also thrive and grow.

Leadership and personal growth are two sides of the same coin. I know to be an effective leader, I must engage in ongoing personal development. Similarly, leadership presents continuous opportunities for self-growth, as it pushes us to refine our emotional intelligence, self-awareness, and resilience. By embracing leadership as a journey of growth—both personal and collective—we not only enhance our leadership capabilities but also create lasting positive impacts on the people and communities we serve. Ultimately, the symbiotic relationship between leadership and personal growth is a powerful one, shaping ourselves and those we lead. Through self-awareness, vulnerability, empathy, and continuous learning, we unlock our full potential while empowering others to do the same.

I’m grateful for the opportunity to be a part of the SW WA Regional Leadership Team.  It has afforded me the personal growth necessary to gain new clarity for my business, but more importantly I now believe in my potential for growing into an influential leader in the future.

I invite you to join us in the arena, find out what’s possible, and unlock your potential.
